COMMONLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Brunch at The Rockwell Harrison Guest Lodge B&B

What is the difference between a Bed & Breakfast versus “AirBNB”

The main difference between a licensed Bed and Breakfast, such as The Rockwell Harrison Guest Lodge B&B, and an “Airbnb” Rental is in their operational structure and regulatory requirements:

1. Licensing and Regulations: Licensed B&Bs typically adhere to specific regulations and requirements set by local governing bodies and industry. They need to meet certain safety standards, obtain permits, undergo inspections, and comply with zoning regulations. These regulations ensure that B&Bs maintain a certain level of quality and safety for guests. They also comply to industry guidelines and practices and pay all applicable taxes and insurance, as registered businesses.

2. Owner Occupancy: B&Bs are often owner-occupied, meaning that the owners live on-site and provide hospitality services to guests. This can create a more personalized and home-like experience for visitors, including a home-cooked Breakfast/Brunch. They are inspected and insured and as such are able to cook and serve food to their Guests (not just serve commercially packaged food). The owner/operators also act as your “local guides” given that they live and network within the community.

3. Professional Hosting: B&B hosts are typically experienced in the hospitality industry and are dedicated to providing services like breakfast, daily housekeeping, and personalized assistance to guests. Typically the facility is only open to Registered Guests and sanctioned/licensed Special Events.

On the other hand, “Airbnb” is a platform that allows individuals to rent out their properties or spare rooms to guests. Here are a few key points about Airbnb:

1. Peer-to-Peer Rentals: Airbnb enables individuals (hosts) to list their properties or rooms for short-term rentals. Hosts can be individuals renting out their primary residences, secondary homes, or investment properties without licensing or regulations.

2. Varied Accommodation Types: Airbnb offers a wide range of accommodation options, including entire homes, apartments, cottages, individual rooms within a property or even other structures.

3. Flexibility: Airbnb provides a platform for hosts to set their own rules, pricing, and availability. Guests can browse listings, communicate with hosts via a hosting platform, and book accommodation through the platform, which charges a commission to both the host and the guest.

4. Regulations Vary! Regulations and requirements for Airbnb rentals vary by location and municipality. Some jurisdictions have implemented specific rules and restrictions on short-term rentals to address concerns related to zoning, safety, taxation, and community impact (Harrison Hot Springs and the District of Kent has recently put restrictions in place for these reasons)

It's important to note that regulations and definitions can differ between regions, so it's always a good idea to familiarize yourself with the specific local regulations and requirements when considering either a licensed B&B or an Airbnb stay.

What are the Advantages of Booking DIRECT?

  4. Direct Communication: Booking directly enables you to have clear and direct communication with the B&B. You can ask questions, inquire about amenities, and clarify any details about your stay. This direct communication can help ensure that you have accurate and up-to-date information.

WHAT ARE MY CHANCES OF RUNNING INTO A SASQUATCH IN THE HARRISON RIVER VALLEY?

Sasquatch in Harrison Hot Springs?

The existence of Sasquatch, also known as Bigfoot, is a subject of folklore and debate. The Harrison River Valley, like many other regions, has its share of alleged Sasquatch sightings and stories. The Sasquatch is one of Harrison’s mascots and folk identities.

However, it's important to note that there is no concrete scientific evidence to support the existence of Sasquatch or any conclusive proof of its presence in the Harrison River Valley, or anywhere else. They are very shy around The Rockwell Harrison Guest Lodge B&B, even though Sasquatch Provincial Park is our Front and Back Yard!

Sasquatch is considered to be a cryptid, a creature whose existence has not been scientifically proven - they are pretty elusive. Reports of Sasquatch sightings often rely on anecdotal accounts, blurry photographs, or inconclusive footprints. While these stories can be intriguing and capture people's imagination, they fall into the realm of folklore and cryptozoology rather than established scientific fact.

If you're interested in the legends and lore surrounding Sasquatch, the Harrison River Valley might offer an opportunity to explore this aspect of local culture and folklore - dating back to our original indigenous inhabitants. Make sure to visit the local Sasquatch Museum at the Tourism Harrison office for some local history and insights! However, it's important to approach the subject with an open mind and understand that the existence of Sasquatch remains unproven.

WHAT ABOUT BEARS IN THE LOCAL AREA?

Black Bears in BC

When hiking in the Harrison River Valley or any wilderness area in British Columbia, it's important to be aware of the potential for bear encounters and take necessary precautions. While bear encounters are rare, it's essential to be prepared and follow guidelines to minimize the risk. Here are some tips:

1. Bear Awareness: Educate yourself about bear behavior, signs of their presence. Fortunately the Harrison area only has Black Bears, which are not predatory and usually go out of their way to avoid human encounters. Knowing how to interpret bear behavior can help you assess and respond appropriately in any potential encounters.

2. Make Noise: While hiking, especially in areas with dense vegetation or limited visibility, make noise to alert bears of your presence. This can help prevent surprising them and potentially triggering defensive behaviors. We call it “common courtesy”.

3. Option of carrying Bear Spray, a specially formulated deterrent, and ensure that it is easily accessible. Learn how to use it effectively and be prepared to properly deploy it if necessary. Remember, bear spray is not a guarantee but can be a useful tool, if used correctly. This is more appropriate in Grizzly territory, as in other regions of the Province and the Canadian Rockies.

4. Travel in Groups: Hiking with a group is generally safer than hiking alone. Larger groups tend to make more noise and can appear more intimidating to bears, reducing the chances of close encounters.

5. Stay Alert and Observant: Keep an eye out for signs of bear activity, such as fresh scat, tracks, or claw marks on trees. Be vigilant when approaching blind corners, dense vegetation, or areas with limited visibility.

6. If camping, secure Food and Garbage: Bears are attracted to food smells, so ensure you properly store food, garbage, and scented items. Use bear-resistant containers or hang food at least 4 meters high and 1 meter from tree trunks. The Rockwell Harrison Guest Lodge and surrounding Sasquatch Provincial Park takes care to not have garbage or other attractants left out.

7. Follow Park Regulations: Be aware of any specific regulations or guidelines for the area you are hiking in and follow them accordingly. These rules are in place to protect both wildlife and visitors.

Remember that while these precautions can reduce the risk, encounters with wildlife are inherently unpredictable. It's important to exercise caution, respect wildlife, and give bears the space they need. If you do encounter a bear, stay calm, assess the situation, and follow recommended guidelines for handling bear encounters, such as slowly backing away, avoiding eye contact, and speaking in a calm voice.

WHAT IS THE BREED OF THE B&B HOST DOGS?

The Regal Vizsla (Lucah, at The Rockwell Harrison Guest Lodge B&B). Our original B&B Host Dog

The Vizsla dog breed originated in Hungary, where it was developed for hunting and retrieving game. It is believed to have ancient roots tracing back to the Magyar tribes who settled in Hungary around the 9th century. Vizslas were highly valued for their hunting abilities, particularly in falconry. They were often kept by the Hungarian nobility and aristocracy.

The Vizsla's ancestors are thought to include various hunting dogs, such as the Transylvanian Hound and Turkish Yellow Dog, which were brought to Hungary by the Magyars. Over time, careful breeding and selection resulted in the development of the Vizsla breed as we know it today.

Vizslas are renowned for their versatility, endurance, and loyalty. They are highly skilled at pointing and retrieving game, making them excellent hunting companions. In recent times, they have also gained popularity as family pets and show dogs due to their friendly nature and striking regal appearance.
